ABOUT MAGNUS
It took another two hours, but Magnus, who should have been very tired, found that he had more energy than he ever had before. He was seething with impatience, however, and every time he saw a man asking Isla to dance, he felt mad with jealousy too.
At last, the cèilidh began to wind down, and the guests slowly but surely began to trickle out. “Finally.” Magnus breathed out a sigh of pure relief. He looked down at Isla and then pulled her into his arms, feeling her breasts pushing against him and arousing him immediately. “Would you feel strange coming to my bedroom?” he asked. When he saw the peculiar look on her face, he added, “Just to talk, of course. There are things I must tell you.”
“Okay,” she replied, “but just to talk!”
“Your feet must be sore after so much dancing. Let me help you, Lady Balfour,” he told her with a twinkle in his eyes.
Then he kissed her, gentle and sweet. Isla gave a little squeal as he swept her off her feet and carried her upstairs and then along corridor after corridor. He never seemed to become tired and she couldn’t help but admire his strength. She laid her head on his shoulder, savoring the feeling of being carried along in his arms. He smelled of some sweet and spicy perfumed oil as well as some other underlying musk that was just him—just Magnus.
Magnus too was enjoying the luxury of having Isla in his arms, feeling her scented chestnut hair draping itself over his arm and her warm body pressed close to his. She weighs hardly anything, he thought, I have lifted heavier hay bales. He looked down at her and she smiled at him.
“Your eyes are so green,” she observed. “Where did you get them?”
They had arrived at his bedroom door and he shouldered it open, then went in and sat her down on the biggest bed she had ever seen before sitting down on the bed next to her and answering her question.
“My mother was a McFarlane,” he replied. “She had brown hair and gray eyes. “My father was a Galbraith, of course, and he had red hair and brown eyes. All my grandparents had light brown hair and different colored eyes, but the family thinks that somewhere in our lineage there was a Viking. We originally came from the Shetlands so it is quite possible. They say that I am a throwback from another generation, but I have no idea.”
“How romantic,” she replied breathily and then looked around. “This is a beautiful room,” she remarked, and indeed it was.
It was paneled on one side and half-paneled on the others with oak, above which was the natural stone of the castle walls. There were intricate cornices along the edges of the ceiling shaped like oak leaves and acorns and just like his office, there was a massive chandelier hung down just above the fireplace. The drapes around the bed were plain white as was the coverlet on the bed and the silk curtains at the windows.
